| bdonline.co.uk by David Rogers Capita Symonds help engineer Goodwood sculptureCapita Symonds helped engineer a central sculpture at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed held in the Sussex Downs over the weekend. The display, which was sponsored by car manufacturer Alfa Romeo, was drawn up by sculptor Gerry Judah and features the red livery of the Italian car firm. It holds an Alfa Romeo P2 car dating from 1925 and a 2003 8C Competizione. Standing at 18.5 m high and 25 m across, the sculpture is made from 12 tonnes of steel and features 32 steel sections. Capita Symonds was asked to carry out the structural engineering on the sculpture, which will now be dismantled. |
 Oh... the automobile plays such an important role in the spatiality of our lives. Quite nice designs (the Alfas), sad that the structure has to be dismantled. Wondering where it will surface again? Gerry Judah again creates an awesome sculpture - he is a master of structure that creates awe, emotion and exhilaration that just comes from experiencing it! UPDATE We heard from Gerry and for the first time a Goodwood Festival of Speed sculpture is being relocated instead of being scrapped. It's off next door (without the cars) to Goodwood Sculpture Park. We will update and post images after the installation. I was really concerned something so inspiring would be thrown aside and no one could enjoy it - evidently others did as well! |
