Code light sculpture goes on show in Guildford

Viewers of a new light sculpture in Surrey will have the chance to crack its code by sending text messages to the artwork.

The sculpture, to be unveiled outside Guildford's G Live entertainment venue on Monday, relays the message with a light representing each letter.

The work by Amenity Space was inspired by Enigma code breaker and Guildford resident, Alan Turing.

Every 24 hours, just as with the German wartime machine, the code will change.

Cracking German codes

Councillor Jen Powell from Guildford Borough Council said: "This beautiful piece of artwork complements the new building and its surroundings wonderfully and the innovative texting and code breaking element is great fun."

Alan Turing was an English mathematician and computer scientist.

During the World War II, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park, Britain's code breaking centre.

He devised a number of techniques for breaking German ciphers.

The sculpture represents the part of the brain called the Wernickes Area, which deciphers words to allow the understanding of speech.
